Making reproductive healthcare accessible and sustainable.
The goal of this project was to design a mobile application that educates and provides support for people who menstruate, whilst offering them sustainable alternatives to birth control packaing and menstruation products they are currently using. The app includes features such as a period tracker, information about menstrual health, and a community forum for users to connect with one another to aid younger users in understanding their bodies. Crimson was developed in response to the 2021 Winter RSA Brief ‘Without Waste’.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Women do not have easy access to sustainable sanitary products and birth control.
As a woman, I was shocked to learn that:
“an estimated 28,114 tonnes of waste is generated annually from menstrual products.”
With the whole world becoming more sustainably conscious in all other manufacturing and production areas, it led us to wonder - why is there such a gap between consumers and their want to use sustainable packaging and products?
SOLUTION
A mobile application that provides accurate information and support for people who menstruate.
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
Competition did not have a sustainability aspect to their platforms.
To understand the current market we would be entering, we decided to conduct a competitive analysis on the major contenders of the women’s health digital app market. This helped us realize that whilst there were many apps which offered specialized resources, an app focusing on sustainability did not exist. This now became the focus of our to be solution.
RESEARCH PROCESS
User research was conducted to understand the needs and pain points of people who menstruate.
TESTING & IMPROVEMENT
RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
On a scale of 1 to 5, how busy are you generally in a day?
How have your experiences obtaining birth control been?
If there were more sustainable methods for birth control packaging, would you prefer to use them rather than regular blister packs?
RESEARCH FINDINGS
Crimson ensures that consistently reminding users of sustainable alternatives, as well as pricing at the time of checkout as well as throughout the month helps users not only remember important commitments they have, like refilling their birth control pills, but also doing it in a sustainable way.
USER JOURNEYS & PERSONAS
The data we collected helped us create a user persona and user journey map to help guide our future design decisions.
WIREFRAMES
Wireframes were created to visualize the user interface and user flow.
